We are delighted to invite you to learn more about Bakewell Choral Society

With a growing membership of over 60 performers, sharing a passion for music from a variety of eras our choir presents a calendar of at least four concerts every year.

Our performances comprise a blend of musical genres from Renaissance to Contemporary works, often involving orchestral accompaniment, employing professional soloists, and support from other singers across the county, including local school children from time to time.

We invite you to take a journey through music across the ages as each of our performances showcase a series of different styles, interpretations and reflections of artists, composers and legendary compositions.

Most important to us is our enjoyment of singing and sharing that combined love for music with our warm and appreciative audiences across the county and the Peaks.

We’d be thrilled to welcome you to one of our concerts, please take a moment to view our calendar of performances and we look forward to seeing you there.

Rehearsals

We practice every Monday from 7:15pm – 9:30pm at Bakewell Methodist Church, 1 Granby Croft, Bakewell, Derbyshire DE45 1EZ between September and June, always working towards our next performance.

In recent years our main concerts have taken place in and close to Bakewell, but have also included Matlock and Darney Dale, a joint performance at Buxton as well as smaller performances at Chatsworth and Haddon Hall.

If you would like to listen in on a rehearsal, are thinking of joining us or want to learn more about our choir, please feel free to pop along and try us out.

Richard Barnes & BCS

Bakewell and District Choral Society, as it was originally known, was founded in September 1978, growing from a successful evening class offered by Richard Barnes at Lady Manners School, Bakewell. Richard taught Music at Lady Manners School, becoming Head of Music, and then Head of 6th Form in later years.

Richard was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours of June 2007 for Services to Education and Music in Derbyshire.

Richard Barnes MBE, Bakewell Choral Society’s founder, Musical Director and Conductor, died peacefully at home on Thursday 26th July 2012. Without the creativity of Richard the Society would not exist so we continue to be thankful for his commitment and enthusiasm in starting this wonderful choir.
